Freedom House and its Data Collection Mechanism

Freedom house is a first independent American organization dedicated for the advancement of freedom around the world. It was founded in 1941 in the city of New York. Currently it is being led by Mark D.Lagon, the organization president.

ITS BASIC AIM AND WORK

 Basic aim of this organization is to promote freedom and democracy all around the world. It works to analyze and resolve the issues and challenges to freedom. It raises the voices of individuals for the attainment of political rights and civil liberties. It also supports and empowers front line activists to safeguard human rights and to promote democracy. Organization identifies that freedom can only prevail in a democratic state where people have a right to vote for the leader of their choice, where they have a freedom of expression and rights of women and minorities are safeguarded. It is estimated that about 2.5 billion people all around the world do not enjoy the basic human rights and are designated as NOT FREE by the Freedom House. Their research establish a policy debate in US and other countries on the decline and progress of freedom They form a collaboration between US leadership and other governments that are interested in provoking freedom in the world. They work together to oppose dictatorship and to promote democracy. They struggle for the people living in repressive societies and advocate for their freedom. Basic issues under its consideration are:

  • Freedom of Expression
  • Internet Freedom
  • Rule of law
  • Religious Freedom
  • Elections
  • LGBTI Freedom
  • Freedom of Press
  • Freedom of World
  • Countries at cross roads
  • Women rights in the Middle East and North Africa

WORKING METHOD AND DATA COLLECTION

Approximately 150 staff members are appointed in Washington and other field offices around the world to conduct a daily work of this organization. It provides an annual report on freedom around the world as experienced by individuals. Freedom house has its main office in New York and several field offices in no of countries. With the help of its regional experts and scholars, it conducts a survey in around 195 countries and 14 selected territories. Both analytical reports and numerical ratings are included in a survey. Each report of a single country includes two sections; an overview section, that provide with a historical background and a short description about major advancements in a preceding year as well as with a current situation of freedom. Furthermore, for political rights each country is allotted a numerical rating on a scale of 1 to 7 and analogous rating for civil liberties. A rating of 1 show a highest level of freedom and a rating of 7 shows a lowest degree of freedom. Analyzing the obtained results, Freedom House classifies each country and territory as FREE PARTLY FREE or NOT FREE
